Re-Inventing Nijinsky (2009)

Re-Inventing Nijinski is a dance performance about the myth of “the creation of art as such” using Vaslav Nijinski as a point of departure. The leitmotiv in Re-Inventing Nijinsky is the constant search for new spaces characteristic of Nijinsky’s life that function as the fundament for all forms of artistic creation. It is a searching for spaces of new thoughts, new forms, new stagings. Searching for the new has been documented in Nijinsky’s poems and diaries, most of which were written when he first fell ill. These texts serve as the starting point for the staging, choreography and sound installation by Mark Lorenz Kysela. The main themes of Nijinsky’s life, his obsession and will to renewal, his dependence and divisiveness are transported into the present and re-invented. The audience experiences a sort of Nijinsky hubris with a captivating rigor and vividness but with ample room for self-discovery.
